This month's topic: Trends and best practice in Advisory Boards.

About our Speaker: Craig Hook, Managing Director, Strategic Intent Consulting

Craig is a strategic advisor working with business owners, boards and executives to develop and execute a compelling business strategy that maximises sustainable business value.  This expertise and experience has been honed over 30 years across international executive, consulting and advisory roles.

Craig’s clients span family and private technology, manufacturing, and professional services businesses.  Typical challenges include improving profitability, organisation design and role clarity, uplifting executive performance, and business transition plan for owners.

Highly accomplished executive, Non-Executive Director and Advisory Board Chair with sustainable growth strategy, organisational performance improvement, digital leadership, and governance experience across a portfolio of Board positions.  Previously Partner of Churchill Consulting and prior to his consulting career, Craig held senior operational and technical roles internationally with Rio Tinto.

The 2025-2027 State of the (Advisory) Market report was released at the Advisory Board Centre Megatrends Summit in May 2025.  The summit discussed trends impacting businesses capturing both the art of skilled facilitation and human dynamics, and the science of structured governance and operational excellence — offering a comprehensive roadmap for organisations determined to lead in an increasingly complex environment.

Both Catherine Sayer, FBA CEO, and Mark Rigotti, AICD CEO, presented giving a cross section of views on governance.

The report, which identifies trends and best practice for advisors, identified three trends which will be presented and discussed:

1. The move to integrating different governance models - ensuring the stretched decision making group (governance board) is integrated with many sources of advice (advisory boards, family councils, etc).

2. Informed leadership - a complex world requires business owners and their managers to leverage many sources of advice. An advisory board gives them this confidence in better analysis and decision making.

3. Balancing short termism - while not usually an issue for family businesses, challenges such as Trump's on again - off again tariffs can push short termism.

We look forward to seeing you there.

This is a hybrid event and you may attend in person or online. If you are unable to attend in person and would like to join the meeting via video, please contact Katie McMeekin, FBA State Representative WA for the link.
