The FBA Advisor Accreditation Program will challenge the way you think about family business advising through expert facilitation and peer-to-peer learning. Designed in partnership with the University of Adelaide, this course focuses on the additional skills and practices you need to address the unique challenges that business families encounter, effectively.

Through practical assessment tasks, you'll demonstrate your increased knowledge and expertise in applying tools that add value to your family business clients. This course builds on Advising Business Families – Part 1, and is the final education in your pathway to becoming a Family Business Accredited Advisor, developing your capabilities in the specialised skills required for effective family business consulting.

This special 2-day intensive in-person course will be held at FBA Head Office, Melbourne.


2-Day Intensive Course: Advising Business Families - Part 2 

This course builds on Advising Business Families - Part 1, covering fundamentals, and equips you with advanced skills to address the complex challenges unique to family business clients.

Key Learnings:

  • Explain the different stages of the family business consulting engagement.

  • Assess your competencies as a family business advisor and the role of collaborative practice.

  • Determine when to adopt an expert vs process-based approach to advising business families.

  • Diagnose the nature and complexity of family dynamics.

  • Conduct family assessment interviews and facilitate effective family meetings.

  • Understand the principles for effective communication and approaches for resolving family conflict.

Topics Include: 

  • Complexities and competencies required to act as Family Enterprise Advisor.

  • Understanding Family Dynamics and the psychology of money and 'wealth'.

  • Undertaking an assessment of the Family Enterprise system.

  • Stages in the family enterprise engagement.

Prerequisite:

  • An active Advisor Membership with Family Business Association.

  • Completion of Advising Business Families - Part 1 or Recognised Prior Learning (as determined by FBA). 

On successful completion of both Part 1 and Part 2 of the Advising Business Families course, you will become an FBA Family Business Accredited Advisor, receiving a certificate, digital badge and all membership benefits.

Dr Dennis Jaffe,
Senior Research Fellow

Dr Jaffe is a globally recognised adviser to families about family business, governance, wealth and philanthropy. For over 40 years, Dr Dennis Jaffe, a San Francisco–based advisor, has been one of the leading architects of the field of family enterprise consulting.

As both an organisational consultant and clinical psychologist, he helps multi-generational families to develop governance practices that build the capability of next-generation leadership and ensure the ongoing capability of financial organisations and family offices to serve their family clients. Dr Jaffe is an author of several books, including “Working With the Ones You Love”, and has a PhD in sociology, all from Yale University. His global insight has led to teaching and consulting engagements in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Latin America.

  

Assoc. Prof Chris Graves,
Discipline Head
University of Adelaide 

Assoc. Prof. Chris Graves is a Chartered Accountant, Co-Founder and Co-Director of the University of Adelaide’s Family Business Education and Research Group [FBERG].

Chris completed his PhD at the University of Adelaide, which investigated the influence of the family system on family business strategy and performance. His PhD research received an honourable mention award from the Family Firm Institute (FFI), based in the USA. He is currently undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Family Therapy as part of his work with the family business sector. Together with FBA, Chris has been responsible for the design and development of the Advisor Accreditation Program.
