In the ever-evolving world of technology, few have navigated the changing tides with as much adaptability and entrepreneurial spirit as David and Mandy Stanbridge. Their journey, spanning over three decades, is a testament to them in the dynamic nature of the IT industry and the growing importance of cybersecurity in our digital age. We spoke with David and Mandy Stanbridge at MetBridge to learn more about their family business, their story of how it all started and how their business focus changed throughout the years.

The story behind MetBridge

David's foray into the tech world began in 1990 when he founded Personal Computer Training (PCT) during the nascent days of IT and the internet. In 1995, he married Mandy, who at that stage showed little interest in technology.

In 1998, David and Mandy moved to the UK where Mandy joined David in the industry. The draw to pursue their own business led them back to South Africa in 2000. There, they established Logicom Data Ltd., a company that provided training and consultancy services to major multinationals like Lotus Development, Coca-Cola, and even the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. This experience not only honed their skills but also expanded their network on a global scale.

The turn of the millennium marked a significant shift when they moved back to the UK. These roles opened their eyes to the critical importance of digital security in an increasingly connected world.

In 2003, driven by their passion for cybersecurity and entrepreneurial spirit, David and Mandy established MetBridge. This venture focused on helping organisations become cyber secure by implementing technologies to detect and prevent cyber attacks. Work during this period included collaborations with giants like Barclays Bank, Bloomberg, and Channel 4 television, as well as contributing to the security of the Athens Olympics.

A new chapter for the business

Life took another turn in 2008 with the birth of their first child, Kai. Seeking a lifestyle that would allow for more family time and outdoor experiences, David and Mandy made the bold decision to move to Perth. Arriving on a sweltering 40-degree day in December 2008, they embarked on a new chapter that would see David apply his expertise to Australia's public sector and Mandy join the global leader in cybersecurity, Fortinet. In Australia, David played a crucial role in maturing the cybersecurity practices of large state departments, including the Department of Education, WA Police, Northern Territory Government, Department of Communities, and Landgate. His work encompassed deploying cyber technologies, assessing and implementing cyber controls, and ensuring robust cyber governance. Meanwhile, Mandy navigated away from traditional IT into the realm of operational technology (OT), which includes the systems used in manufacturing, water filtration, farming, and energy production—systems we need to survive but often take for granted.

David's entrepreneurial spirit and keen eye for market needs led him to identify a significant gap: affordable cybersecurity services for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). The 2023 ASD Cyber Threat Report revealed a startling statistic—92.6% of cyber breach reports came from companies with turnovers under $2 million. With average incident costs reaching $97,203 for medium-sized organisations and $45,965 for small businesses, it became clear that many companies simply couldn't afford such financial hits.

This realisation prompted David to refocus MetBridge Cyber Consulting on assisting these vulnerable organisations. Recognising that many companies need robust cybersecurity but can't afford the high fees asked by professional services companies, he decided to leave traditional employment and dedicate himself to this mission.

Today, MetBridge Security Consulting offers a comprehensive suite of virtual CISO services. These include security assessments, computer control reviews, risk and vulnerability assessments, and facilitation of good cyber governance through policy creation, procedural guidelines, and detailed playbooks. The firm also provides tailored security training, runs tabletop simulations for incident readiness, produces comprehensive cyber reports, and manages security functions.

Joining Family Business Association

Understanding the importance of community and shared knowledge, MetBridge has joined Family Business Association (FBA). This membership aligns with the company's core values of community support and knowledge sharing, providing a platform to network with like-minded family-owned businesses and advocate for the importance of cybersecurity in protecting not just individual businesses but the broader community.

As cyber threats continue to evolve and proliferate, David, Mandy, and MetBridge Cyber Consulting stand ready to help businesses navigate these challenges. Their goal is not just to protect individual companies but to contribute to a safer digital environment for all, recognising that in our interconnected world, the security of one is the security of many.
